Poland Finally Gets to Ban Monsanto Maize

Poland has become the eighth member of the EU's 27 states to ban the cultivation of genetically modified (GM) crops. 
Seven other EU member states have already imposed bans on the cultivation of GM crops approved by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) as safe: Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, Luxembourg, Greece and Bulgaria. 

Poland along with many other states have been trying to do this for at least 5 years with little success until now, in 2008 European Commission lawyers stopped Poland's move to ban trade and plantings of genetically modified (GMO) seeds, saying it had no scientific justification.

In the UK : the Church of England has refused permission for GE crop trials on 60,000 hectares of its land, dozens of local authorities supply GE free school lunches.

The House of Commons banned GE foods for its catering as far back as 1998!..long before GMO was even considered a major health risk (these people aint stupid)
The vote of the Welsh Assembly to keep Wales GE free was counteracted by the ministry of Agriculture approving a GE maize variety. The Island of Jersey banned GE crops. 

Israel: A heavy user of GMO (although most it's people do not seem to know this fact)
 has strangely enough been suffering from plagues of oversized locust for quite a while and has not banned GMO, but are getting around the above problem in an ingenious way!

Italy: The four regions Tuscany, Molise, Lazio and Marche and around 25 provinces, cities and communes banned GE crops, including Rome, Milan, Turin, Brescia and Genoa. 
These are all democratically-taken decisions in local or regional councils and in the case of Tuscany, the result has been ratified by the national government - the decision means that regional governments have been given the authority under Italian law to overturn decisions taken at EU level. 

Austria: Bans on three GE maize (Novartis, Monsanto and AgrEvo), the Federal Institute for Less-Favoured and Mountainous Areas is pressing for GM free legislation and published a study on GE-free zones, initiatives in the States of Vorarlberg and Salzburg to ban GE 
trials. 

France: ban of PGS and AgrEvo HR rapeseed 

Germany: Ban of Novartis Bt maize. The initiative "No GE on communal land" of BUND (Friends of the Earth Germany) launched activities in several German communities to discuss and vote on the GE-free resolutions. Application are launched in: Bad Vilbel, Blauenstein, Lahr, Konstanz, Hannover, Hamburg. Application are accepted in: M¸nchen, Reutlingen, Freidrichsdorf, Blomberg, Seligenstadt, Niddatal, Maintal, Riedstadt, Adendorf, Schwebheim, Pinneberg, Schwabach, Langenhagen, Wyhe, Burgdorf, Neetze, District Traunstein. 
Several protestant regional church organisations: banned GE crops from their land: Hannover, Hessen und Nassau, Sachsen, Protestantic Church of Westfalen, Protestantic Church in Berlin-Brandenburg, Church Province of Sachsen. 

Luxembourg: Ban of Novartis Bt maize. 

Portugal: Ban of Novartis Bt maize. 

Greece: Ban of AgrEvo HR rapeseed, moratorium of GE crop trials. 

Spain: The Basque Government went for a five year blanket moratorium for GMOs. The Basque Government claims full powers for agricultural policy and thus that they can provisionally ban GMOs if they so wish. The three provinces of Castilla-La Mancha and Baleares banned GE food, AndalucÌa declared a five year moratorium on GE 
crop trials and GE food. 


OTHERS 

Switzerland: Ban on GMO crops Although Switzerland's move does not ban research on genetically modified organisms, the group said it feared it would deter companies from making further investment.

Norway: Banned the import of several GE crops and products which contain antibiotic resistance genes. 

Australia: The State of Tasmania banned GE rapeseed as weed, Western Australia has banned commercial GE planting. Australian States are given the right to declare themselves GE free. Some communities (e.g. Bondi/Sydney, West Wimmera Shire) declared 
themselves GE free. 

New Zealand: Some local bodies in Auckland and Wellington have declared themselves GM free. Trials with GE salmon have been blocked by the government. 

Thailand: Banned imports of 40 GE crops for commercial planting, but not for research purposes. 

Philippines: The community of Valencia called for a five-year moratoria on GE food and GE crop trials and commercialization. 
The Philippine president announced a moratorium on GE crop research. 

Saudi Arabia: Banned food that are made from GMOs and declared not to import GE wheat. 

Egypt: Declared not to import GE wheat. 

Algeria: Banned the import, distribution, commercialisation and utilization 
of GE plants except for research purposes. 

Brazil: Planting GE seeds is prohibited by federal law in Brazil for the time being, the States of Rio Grande do Sul and Mato Grosso do Sul have declared their intentions to remain GM-free, 18 States called upon the Central government to block commercial GE crop planting. 

Paraguay: The Ministry of Agriculture plans to ban GE crops from commercial planting.

0 Mass Roll Out Of "Knife Arch" Detectors On UK Streets.

Many revellers in Plymouth will be asked to walk through a knife-detecting machine on Friday and Saturday night.

Police will be deploying two of the so-called "knife arches" at Mutley Plain and other areas of the city.

It follows the stabbing of a 23-year-old man in Mutley Plain last Saturday.

The portable knife arches are similar to metal detectors used in airports and can be assembled within minutes. Extra police patrols are also being brought into the city.

Senior officers said the city did not have a particular issue with knife crime, but deploying the arches, as well as extra patrols, would help to reassure the public.

Three men have been charged with attempted murder after the Mutley Plain stabbing last week.

The victim was getting into a taxi when he was seriously hurt in the assault.

The suspects have all been remanded in custody by Plymouth Magistrates' Court to appear before the city's crown court on 29 April.

The victim, who has not been named, suffered multiple stab wounds in the attack. He is being treated at Derriford Hospital where his condition has been described as stable.

Knife arches are a sensitive issue in Britain, where they've been criticised by civil liberties campaigners.

The police are keen to make sure their deployment on the streets of Plymouth is as uncontroversial as possible, in an attempt to maintain a consensus of support for their use.

"Officers will be on hand to explain why they're being deployed and no one will be forced to walk through an arch.

But anyone who refuses, will, of course, mark themselves as potentially worthy of further police interest."

Knife Arch Operation in Gloucester

April 5 2013

This man should be arrested for stupidity alone.

A knife arch will be used in pubs and clubs in Gloucester tonight and tomorrow night as police aim to send out a strong message about people carrying the potential weapon.

Officers from the local policing team will set up the crime reduction device at licensed premises to make sure anyone entering the venues is not carrying a blade.

Undercover officers will be also be used throughout the city to spot anyone acting suspiciously or believed to be concealing a knife.

Night enforcement officer PC Mark Mansfield said: “We’ve been doing this for a long time but after the stabbing last weekend we thought it would be very important to do it again and let people know that carrying a knife of any sort is completely unacceptable.

“It will be a condition of entry for anyone entering these establishments to walk through the knife arch. People have to empty their pockets and then walk through the arch. Lights flash beside the corresponding part of the body where metal is detected and a search is then made.

“If you’re found with a knife of any type it’ll be confiscated and you may be arrested.

“The pubs and clubs we do this at are totally on board. 
In the future I want to use the arch on the streets themselves because I think that will be very effective too. Everyone has to know that you can’t just carry a knife in a public place.

“We want Gloucester to be a safe and pleasant place to come to at night and we really hope this reassures visitors to the city.”

Shepherd’s Bush police search for weapons in knife arch operation

Local police set up a knife arch at Goldhawk Road Tube station last Saturday (14 June) in a bid to tackle knife crime in the area.

The Shepherd’s Bush Green Safer Neighbourhood Team carried out spot checks on people coming out of the station, who were met by an airport-style gateway and officers carrying hand-held scanners.

“We won’t tolerate people carrying knives,” said Sergeant Ian Lewis.

“Evidence shows it is predominantly young men of all ethnic backgrounds who carry knives,” he said. “There is also evidence of females carrying them,” he added, pointing to a female officer on hand to assist with searches. There were plain clothes police officers outside the station area for backup.

During the two-hour operation, 24 people of all ages and backgrounds were stopped and searched, one knife was surrendered and one arrest made, on an unrelated matter.

“Knife crime is not particularly bad in this area,” Sergeant Lewis said. “There are other boroughs that are much worse.”

Despite my concerns about what I was viewing when I returned home, I proceeded to translate and post the film on You Tube because of the film's extraordinary content.

 I have now made public my belief that this film was never intended for a domestic audience in the DPRK. Instead, I believe that these people, who presented themselves as 'defectors' specifically targeted me because of my reputation as a translator and interpreter. Furthermore, I now believe these people work for the DPRK. 
The fact that I have continued to translate and post the film in spite of this belief does not make me complicit in their intention to spread their ideology. 
I chose to keep posting this film because - regardless of who made it - I believe people should see it because of the issues it raises and I stand by my right to post it for people to share and discuss freely with each other.

Mere chance? while the Sahel region is subject to disturbances increasingly violent, the news reminds us that the region is rich in oil.

French oil giant Total has just announced that it has signed two exploration licenses with the Mauritanian authorities in the basin Taoudéni very promising.

The group has acquired, as operator, a 90% interest in Blocks C 9 in ultra-deep water and Ta 29 onshore in the basin Taoudéni . Mauritanian national company SMH will hold the remaining 10%.

The block C 9 is located approximately 140 kilometers west of the Mauritanian coast, extends over 10,000 km (! ...), With water depths ranging between 2,500 and 3,000 meters. Block Ta 29 is located in the Sahara desert 1,000 kilometers east of Nouakchott, north of Block Ta 7 in which Total is already conducting exploration activities.

In February 2011, the Algerian press reported that the French group Total and Sonatrach Algerian national energy company had in their wallets several projects in the Sahel. Most seem to be two groups of "grab" the most possible projects in Mali and Niger.

Recent discoveries of mineral wealth in the basin Taoudéni wide, 1.5 million square kilometers, divided between Mali, Algeria, Mauritania and Niger, cause now make a strong interest in this area.

Jean François Arrighi de Casanova, Director North Africa Total has reported huge gas discoveries in the area, slowing the progression of the well to the oil zone, Mauritania and even leading to talk of a "new Eldorado" .

Through its international subsidiary Sipex, Sonatrach has also received approval from the Nigerian Ministry of Mines to conduct experimental drilling.

As a reminder, Sipex is present in Niger since 2005, specifically in the scope of Kafra, located on the border between Algeria and Niger.

End of 2009, Sipex received a one-year extension of the first exploration period, citing a difficult political situation in the country.

In Mali, a subsidiary of Sonatrach has since 2007 acquired a further two years from the Malian Ministry of Mines for the first exploration phase will end in 2013.

At three months of the presidential election in Mali, the government already faces kidnapping al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and the threat of a food crisis, must now face a new Tuareg rebellion.

Thus, the Malian army has taken on the night of Thursday to Friday the control of the three cities in the north-eastern Mali on Tuesday and Wednesday attacked by rebels.

"The Malian army has taken control of the towns of Menaka, Tessalit and Aguelhok. Reinforcements came on the spot, "said a military source region.

These attacks are the first of its kind since an agreement that ended the rebellion but also for the return of Libya toe hundreds of armed men who fought alongside the forces of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

More broadly, the instability caused by the activities of AQIM in northern Mali , instead of several implementations of its bases has been boosted by the return of Libyan territory hundreds of these rebels.

As we approached the Macondo area, we first flew a few miles west to see if the new small slick we had seen ther last Sunday remained.  Sure enough, it does, same size and same place.  Perhaps this is a new natural seep? (This was NRC Incident Report #1036760 for today.)

Arriving at the scene of the 2010 April BP disaster, near the infamous lease block "MC252", we saw the most dramatic and disturbing site of all. This surface slick now stretches more than 7 nm in length south to north and is over a mile wide in many places.  There are patches of rainbow and weathered “mousse” in it as well, which we have not seen out there for many months.  (This was NRC Incident Report #1036763, our fourth and final report for today.)
