0 FBI: Israeli consulates targeted for suspicious letters
The suspicious letter found Tuesday afternoon at the Israeli consulate in Atlanta is similar to those found at other Israeli consulates during the past two days, an FBI spokesman told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
“There’s a lot of white powder letters that are going to Israeli consulates around the country," Chris Allen of the FBI said late Tuesday. "There may be more out there."

So far, the substances have been harmless, Allen said. He declined to say how many related cases are under investigation.
"All of the ones we’re aware of have been field tested and are negative," Allen said. "Anyone who came in contact with it is asymptomatic."
A Midtown building that houses the Israeli consulate, at the intersection of Spring and 12th streets, was evacuated Tuesday afternoon after the suspicious letter was found. The building also houses Westwood College.“We took the normal precautions and sealed it up," David Rhodes, a battalion chief with the Atlanta Fire Department, told Channel 2 Action News.
Spring Street also was closed for a time.
The FBI will conduct additional testing on the substance, Allen said.
No injuries were reported, officials said.
The Israeli consulate in Boston was evacuated Monday due to a suspicious package, as well as embassies in The Hague and Brussels, according to media reports.

0 NSA to enlarge Fort Gordon complex
One of the U.S. intelligence community’s newest and largest top-secret surveillance facilities is about to get even larger.
The National Security Agency and its Central Security Service will add 45,000 square feet to the 500,000-square-foot Whitelaw Wedge complex – part of the Regional Security Operations Center – completed last year at Fort Gordon.
According to an unclassified version of the fiscal 2012 Military Construction and Appropriations bill, an initial allocation of $11.3 million was enlarged, through a last-minute earmark, to $17.5 million.
More space is needed, according to budget documents, because “the capacity of the existing facility at the planned location will not meet anticipated mission requirements.”
Although its operations are largely secret, the NSA’s acknowledged missions include collecting and analyzing, through “clandestine” means when necessary, “intelligence information from foreign signals for intelligence and counterintelligence purposes and to support military operations.”
The $1 billion Fort Gordon facility, covering almost 160 acres, will employ as many as 4,000 military and civilian analysts, linguists and other personnel at peak operations. The existing facility, for which ground was broken in March 2007, has more than 2,400 parking spaces.
Its mission, as described in a Development Authority of Richmond County brochure, is to “conduct continuous security operations on selected targets in support of national and warfighter intelligence requirements from Fort Gordon, using remoting technologies.”
NSA spokesperson Vanee’ Vines, citing agency policy, could not elaborate on the specific uses for the added space but said the expansion will bring additional jobs during construction.
The National Security Agency, headquartered in Fort Meade, Md., is the intelligence service that monitors global communications for the U.S. government.
The agency also manages the government’s cryptological resources and is responsible for preventing foreign adversaries from accessing national security information.
Bid requests on government Web sites say the Fort Gordon addition can be “fast-tracked” to assure timely completion by September 2013, with construction scheduled to begin in February.

Many living on Hayling Island and in Emsworth have been disturbed by the noisy aircraft which has been flying between 1.30am and 6am every day for over a week.
Scores complained to the Civil Aviation Authority – only to be told the Ministry of Defence mission was top secret.
It has been discovered that the light commercial propeller plane – which belongs to 2Excel Aviation Ltd – was carrying out a national security survey of a three-mile radius surrounding Thorney Island.
A spokesman from 2Excel told one resident that it was carrying out anti-terrorism tests, but the company would not confirm or deny this to The News.
Paul Fisher, chairman of Hayling Island Residents’ Association, said: ‘I have no doubt that what they are doing is important, but why didn’t they tell anyone they were going to do it?
‘It’s causing people a lot of stress. They are losing a lot of sleep over it and they don’t even know what it’s all about.’
Simon Spurge, 53, of Orchard Lane, Emsworth, added: ‘It’s been going on for a week and it’s driving me mad. I’m a light sleeper so it kept me awake on Saturday and Sunday.’
Flying was scheduled to take place every night until January 28, but the Defence Science Technology Laboratory – the government body that commissioned 2Excel to carry out the work – called a halt to flying on Sunday night.
It claimed all the necessary data, which needed to be collected at night due to the nature of the survey, had been gathered.
Lorraine Clode, chairwoman of Emsworth Residents’ Association, said: ‘I heard them night after night, and it has resulted in a lack of sleep, but if it’s of military nature then I’m prepared to put up with it.’
The plane could be heard as far away as Southsea and Petersfield. Despite the complaints, aircraft noise is not classified as a statutory nuisance.
A DSTL spokeswoman said: ‘The aircraft which were flying over the Thorney Island area were part of an exercise at the military base being run by the DSTL, in support of national security. DSTL always endeavours to keep any disruption to local residents to a minimum and apologises for any inconvenience caused during this trial. The aircraft’s involvement has now concluded.’

In Bani Walid, hundreds of well-equipped and highly trained remnants of Gaddafi's forces battled for eight hours on Monday with the local pro-NTC revolutionary brigade, known as the May 28 Brigade, said Mubarak al-Fatmani, the head of Bani Walid local council.
The brigade was driven out and Gaddafi loyalists then raised their old green flag over buildings in the western city.
Four revolutionary fighters were killed and 25 others were wounded in the fighting, al-Fatmani said.
There were no immediate signs that the uprising was part of some direct attempt to restore the family of Gaddafi, who was swept out of power in August and then killed in the nearby city of Sirte in October.
His sons, daughter and wife have been killed, arrested or have fled to neighbouring countries.
Instead, the fighting seemed to reflect a rejection of NTC control by a city that never deeply accepted its rule, highlighting the still unresolved tensions between those who benefited under Gaddafi's regime and those now in power.
Those tensions are tightly wound up with tribal and regional rivalries around the country.
The May 28 Brigade had kept only a superficial control over the city, the head of Bani Walid's military council, Abdullah al-Khazmi, acknowledged.
"The only link between Bani Walid and the revolution was May 28, now it is gone and 99 per cent of Bani Walid people are Gaddafi loyalists," he said.
He spoke to The Associated Press at a position on the eastern outskirts of Bani Walid, where hundreds of pro-NTC reinforcements from Benghazi were deployed with convoys of cars mounted with machine guns, though there was no immediate move to retake the city.

The killing is suspected to be aninside job following intensified divisions within the ranks of top Al-Shabaaband Al-Qaeda leaders. In the recentpast, three rival factions have emerged within the terrorist ranks in Somaliapitting local versus foreign dominated militants. Berjawi’s came to Somalia in 2006 andfought alongside the Islamic Courts Union (ICU) the predecessor of Al-Shabaabmilitia group. He was involved in the formation of the Kenyan cell of Al-Qaeda.He controlled vast resources channeled through him to Somalia that gave hisfaction massive influence and an advantage over other group fighting to takecontrol of the terror group.
The death of Berjawi has furtherintensified divisions within the ranks of Al-Shabaab and foreign fighters inSomalia and the East Africa region following claims that Godane and topAl-Shabaab leaders were either directly involved in the planning and executionof Berjawi or provided vital information that led to his killing.
The Al-Shabaab websites of Somalimemoand their twitter account of HSM Press Office has confirmed the killing ofBerjawi but claimed that a US drone attack was involved in his killing. Multiple sources on the ground havereported that the car bombing was as a result of an improvised explosive device(IED) or land mine planted on the path of the vehicle and not a drone attack asclaimed by the militia group.

The ad-hoc group that took part in the call decided that although there are only two weeks to organize, it will invite anti-war forces around the world to join in to make this emergency protest a global day of action.
All agreed on the need to stop U.S. imperialism and/or Israel from launching a military attack on Iran. There was also a consensus that the new sanctions President Barack Obama signed into law on Dec. 31 -- with the goal of breaking the Iranian central bank -- were themselves an act of war aimed at the Iranian people. The political activists on the call raised the danger of a wider war should fighting break out in or around Iran.
While the organizations involved had varied assessments of the Iranian government, they all saw any intervention from U.S. imperialism in the Southwest Asian country as a threat to the entire region and to peace. Some of the people on the call who are originally from Iran and who were in touch with family and friends there conveyed the Iranian people’s anger at the recent assassination of a young scientist.
There was agreement to make “no assassinations” one of the demands to show solidarity with the Iranian population as well as to condemn the U.S. and its allies for criminal activities against Iran and its people.
As of Jan. 19, the organizations that called the actions or endorsed later included the United National Anti-War Coalition (UNAC), the International Action Center (IAC), SI! 0 Scientists agree to halt H5N1 research for 60 days
Scientists studying a more transmissible strain of the H5N1 avian influenza virus have agreed to halt their research for 60 days out of concern that the virus they created could accidentally escape or be used as a devastating weapon of bioterrorism.
Thirty-nine scientists signed a letter that was published in the journals Nature and Science defending their research. They said that it was crucial to public health efforts, including the development of surveillance programs that could be used to detect mutations in H5N1 that might lead to a pandemic, according to Reuters.
The researchers appear to be bowing to a widespread outcry over the potential for the virus to escape from laboratories or to be used as a bioterror weapon.
The signatories included the leaders of two independent teams from the United States and the Netherlands who created a more virulent form of the virus that can easily spread among humans. Other signatories included influenza experts from institutions like the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the University of Hong Kong.
Ron Fouchier, a scientist with the University of Erasmus in the Netherlands who is at the center of the controversy, said that the decision is totally voluntary and designed to give global health agencies and governments time to examine the potential benefits of the research and to weigh its risks.
“It is the right thing to do, given the controversies in the U.S.,” Fouchier said, Reutersreports.
In December, the U.S. National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity asked Science and Nature to omit certain portions of Fouchier’s research, as well as research conducted by Yoshihiro Kawaoka of the University of Wisconsin.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the U.S. National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health, said that the decision to pause the research was warranted.
“The proposal the investigators put forth to do this research was appropriate,” Fauci, who was involved in the moratorium’s decision, said, Reuters reports. “The value of the research is clear, as even the biosecurity board unanimously agreed.”

SEATTLE -- A day after a major Pacific storm covered Washington state in snow, the Seattle area on Thursday dealt with a new menace: an ice storm that shut down the airport and toppled trees -- cutting power to some 200,000 homes and businesses, cutting off roads and taking the life of a man on his ATV.
Some commuters gingerly tried to make it to work as a freezing rain iced over roads, but others stayed home.
Several major roads were cut off by fallen trees weighed down by ice and snow. Near Issaquah, a suburb east of Seattle, a man on his ATV was killed by a falling tree, NBC affiliate KING5.com reported.
Gov. Christine Gregoire declared a state of emergency by late morning, a move that would allow her to deploy National Guard troops if needed.
The National Weather Service used the Emergency Alert System to break into Thursday morning broadcasts with an ice storm warning until noon for the Seattle area and southwest Washington. That was later extended to 2 p.m.
A mix of snow and ice was expected Thursday afternoon and overnight before warmer temperatures bring rain and the possibility of flooding.

Summary: An Israeli hacker who goes by the name Hannibal this week stole 85,000 Facebook logins from Arab users of the social network, as part of an online hacker war being fought in the Middle East.
In case you’ve been sleeping under a rock (or were understandably distracted by whatAnonymous is up to), you may not know that Israel and Saudi Arabia are currently in the middle ofa hacker war. In addition to millions of e-mail accounts, bank accounts, and credit cards, information from Facebook, or more specifically, from the users of the world’s biggest social network, has been stolen.
Earlier this week, an Israeli hacker, who calls himself Hannibal online, managed to obtain the Facebook credentials (e-mail addresses and passwords) of 85,000 “helpless Arabs.” He then proceeded to post them on Pastebin, a simple website that allows anyone to upload text (usually code) for public viewing. He first posted 20,000 logins on Sunday, then 30,000 logins on Monday, then 10,000 logins on Tuesday, and finally 25,000 logins on Wednesday. On Thursday, Hannibal went silent.
I will not be linking directly to the Pastebin posts in question, because they do still have e-mail addresses and passwords that work, but I do believe the headers of Hannibal’s pastes are relevant.

Facebook’s automated systems quickly sprang into action this week. Some of the logins don’t work because users have already changed their passwords. Others still do, but Facebook prompts these users and tells them they’re trying putting in an old password (see screenshot above). In other words, while some of the accounts were accessed by other users after Hannibal stole them, Facebook appears to have (automatically) locked all these accounts down so nobody can access them. If you’re the owner of the account, you’ll have to go through the process of resetting your password so that you can access it again.
I have contacted Facebook for more information and will update you if I hear back.
