SEATTLE -- A day after a major Pacific storm covered Washington state in snow, the Seattle area on Thursday dealt with a new menace: an ice storm that shut down the airport and toppled trees -- cutting power to some 200,000 homes and businesses, cutting off roads and taking the life of a man on his ATV.
Some commuters gingerly tried to make it to work as a freezing rain iced over roads, but others stayed home.
Several major roads were cut off by fallen trees weighed down by ice and snow. Near Issaquah, a suburb east of Seattle, a man on his ATV was killed by a falling tree, NBC affiliate KING5.com reported.
Gov. Christine Gregoire declared a state of emergency by late morning, a move that would allow her to deploy National Guard troops if needed.
The National Weather Service used the Emergency Alert System to break into Thursday morning broadcasts with an ice storm warning until noon for the Seattle area and southwest Washington. That was later extended to 2 p.m.
A mix of snow and ice was expected Thursday afternoon and overnight before warmer temperatures bring rain and the possibility of flooding.

0 Thailand gives official recognition for Palestinian statehood

Thailand says it has recognized Palestine as an independent state.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Thani Thongphakdi said Friday that Thailand has informed the Palestinian delegation and all member states at the United Nations in New York that it “has given recognition to the state of Palestine.”

The move comes as Palestine pushes for full membership at the U.N., a bid Washington opposes because it says a political settlement with Israel must be reached first.
Thailand has friendly ties with Israel and is a major tourist destination for Israeli travelers.
Thai officials have expressed concern that the recent arrest of a Lebanese man allegedly linked to Hezbollah and plotting an attack in Bangkok could hurt ties with Middle Eastern countries.

0 Israeli hacker steals 85,000 Facebook logins from Arabs

Summary: An Israeli hacker who goes by the name Hannibal this week stole 85,000 Facebook logins from Arab users of the social network, as part of an online hacker war being fought in the Middle East.

In case you’ve been sleeping under a rock (or were understandably distracted by whatAnonymous is up to), you may not know that Israel and Saudi Arabia are currently in the middle ofa hacker war. In addition to millions of e-mail accounts, bank accounts, and credit cards, information from Facebook, or more specifically, from the users of the world’s biggest social network, has been stolen.
Earlier this week, an Israeli hacker, who calls himself Hannibal online, managed to obtain the Facebook credentials (e-mail addresses and passwords) of 85,000 “helpless Arabs.” He then proceeded to post them on Pastebin, a simple website that allows anyone to upload text (usually code) for public viewing. He first posted 20,000 logins on Sunday, then 30,000 logins on Monday, then 10,000 logins on Tuesday, and finally 25,000 logins on Wednesday. On Thursday, Hannibal went silent.
I will not be linking directly to the Pastebin posts in question, because they do still have e-mail addresses and passwords that work, but I do believe the headers of Hannibal’s pastes are relevant.

Facebook’s automated systems quickly sprang into action this week. Some of the logins don’t work because users have already changed their passwords. Others still do, but Facebook prompts these users and tells them they’re trying putting in an old password (see screenshot above). In other words, while some of the accounts were accessed by other users after Hannibal stole them, Facebook appears to have (automatically) locked all these accounts down so nobody can access them. If you’re the owner of the account, you’ll have to go through the process of resetting your password so that you can access it again.
I have contacted Facebook for more information and will update you if I hear back.

0 Chinese premier defends oil trade with Iran

Speaking at the end of a six-day Middle East visit, Wen Jiabao also warns Tehran against developing nuclear weapons

Chinese premier Wen Jiabao has defended his country's extensive oil trade with Iran against pressure from the west to impose sanctions, and yet has also warned Tehran against any effort to acquire nuclear weapons.
Wen spoke on Wednesday at the end of a six-day visit to the Middle East, against a backdrop of tensions over possible US sanctions on countries that do energy trade with Iran, which the west says is focused on developing nuclear weapons.
Iran has insisted its nuclear goals are peaceful, and in late December threatened to punish the latest western sanctions by limiting the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for much of the Middle East's oil exports.
"China adamantly opposes Iran developing and possessing nuclear weapons," said Wen, and he warned against potential confrontation in the Strait of Hormuz. Beijing is usually much more measured when describing Iran's nuclear ambitions.
Speaking at a news conference in Doha, Wen also took aim at both potential threats to China's oil imports: the US sanctions pressure and the Hormuz tensions.
"I also want to clearly point out that China's oil trade with Iran is normal trade activity," he said in response to a question about US and European efforts to curtail Iranian oil exports and revenues, according to a transcript on the Chinese foreign ministry's website.
"Legitimate trade should be protected, otherwise the world economic order would fall into turmoil," he added.
But Wen shrugged off worry about China's oil needs.
"I don't have this or that worry about China's oil supplies, and this time I didn't discuss this issue with the leaders of each country," he told the news conference.
Wen visited Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
The Chinese leader's comments laid bare the difficult path Beijing is trying to steer between pressure from Washington and its allies and rival expectations from Iran, which looks to China as a sympathetic power and a big oil customer.
Wen's warning was not the first time China has openly stated its opposition to Iran possibly developing nuclear weapons; in 2010, the foreign ministry made the point at least twice.
"There have been similar statements [from China] before, and of course China has repeatedly voted in favour of resolutions over this issue in the UN security council," said Yin Gang, an expert on the Middle East at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing.
"This time, Premier Wen made that point a bit more clearly than usual," Yin said.
"The core of the Iran nuclear issue is whether or not it develops nuclear weapons. It's not only the US that worries about this. The Arab countries are even more worried."
The tensions are a particular worry for China, the biggest buyer of Iranian oil, followed by India and Japan. Only Saudi Arabia and Angola sell more crude than Iran to China.
"We believe that, no matter what the circumstances, the security of the Gulf of Hormuz and normal shipping passage through it must be guaranteed, because this is in the interests of the whole world," said Wen.
"Any extreme measures on this issue would violate the wishes of all countries in the world and their people."
The Obama administration last week invoked US law to sanction China's state-run Zhuhai Zhenrong Corp, which it said was Iran's largest supplier of refined petroleum products.
The US is also working out how to enforce a law enacted on 31 December that targets foreign financial institutions doing business with Iran's central bank, notably to buy crude.
China has backed UN security council resolutions calling on Iran to halt uranium enrichment activities, while working to ensure its energy ties are not threatened.
In the first 11 months of 2011, Chinese crude imports from Iran were at about 553,000 barrels per day, a gain of nearly 30% on the same period a year before, according to Chinese customs data.
"There's no doubt that China and Iran maintain normal trade relations, but we certainly won't abandon principles for the sake of doing deals," said Wen.

0 The badly-kept secret of Israel's trade throughout the Muslim world

There's a good chance that Iran's computer systems, the electricity in Indonesian PM's office and the body armor protecting Saudi soldiers came Israel.

Motti (not his real name ), a businessman with connections in Arab countries, was stunned several months ago when representatives of a well-known Israeli food company asked him to check the possibility of exporting to Iran. They told him an Iranian company had approached them through contacts abroad.
Motti refused. He didn't want to violate the embargo. But since then, he says, he's discovered that quite a few local companies and businessmen trade indirectly with Israel's number one enemy. So he wasn't shocked by a Bloomberg News story three weeks ago about Allot Communications selling Internet surveillance and monitoring equipment to Iran over five years through a Danish distributor.

According to the article, Allot sent the equipment to Denmark where workers removed the labels and repackaged it to hide its Israeli origin. It was then passed along to an intermediary who sold it to Iran. Three former Allot employees told Bloomberg that the equipment's Iranian destination was an open secret, but the company denied giving its approval or having any knowledge of its products winding up there.
"Trade with Iran is an ancient story," says Prof. Uri Bialer of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, an expert in international relations who has researched ties between Israel and Iran. "Money has no smell. Iranians always try to do business, and there have always been Israelis with an eye for making money."
Nachum Shiloh, an expert on Iran and owner of GMI - Gulf Markets Intelligence - says that for some Iranian businessmen it makes sense to import from Israel. "Here we view Iran as the enemy, a demon," he explains, "but not every Iranian gets up every morning thinking of ways to destroy Israel. Iran has a large segment of businessmen who are not fanatics, people who want to make money and further their businesses - if they could only trade, even indirectly, with businesspeople and companies from Israel."

0 Why Iran’s Jews are Better Off Than Gaza’s Palestinians

25,000 Jews live in Iran. It’s the largest Jewish population in the Middle East outside of Israel. Iranian Jews are not persecuted or abused by the state, in fact, they are protected under Iran’s constitution.
They are free to practice their religion and to vote in elections. They are not stopped and searched at checkpoints, they are not brutalized by an occupying army, and they are not herded into a densely-populated penal colony (Gaza) where they are deprived of the basic means of survival. Iranian Jews live in dignity and enjoy the benefits of citizenship.
Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is demonized in the western media. He is called an anti-Semite and the “new Hitler”. But if those claims are true, then why did the majority of Iran’s Jews vote for Ahmadinejad in recent presidential elections? Could it be that most of what we know about Ahmadinejad is just baseless rumor and propaganda?
This excerpt appeared in an article by the BBC:
“(Ahmadinejad’s) office recently donated money for Tehran’s Jewish hospital. It is one of only four Jewish charity hospitals worldwide and is funded with money from the Jewish diaspora – something remarkable in Iran where even local aid organizations have difficulty receiving funds from abroad for fear of being accused of being foreign agents.”
When did Hitler ever donate money to Jewish hospitals? The Hitler analogy is a desperate attempt to brainwash Americans. It tells us nothing about what Ahmadinejad is really like.
The lies about Ahmadinejad are no different than the lies about Saddam Hussein or Hugo Chavez. The US and Israel are trying to create the justification for another war. That’s why the media credits Ahmadinejad with saying things that he never really said. He never said that he wanted to “wipe Israel off the map”. That’s another fiction. Author Jonathan Cook explains what the Iranian president really said:
“This myth has been endlessly recycled since a translating error was made of a speech Ahmadinejad delivered nearly two years ago. Farsi experts have verified that the Iranian president, far from threatening to destroy Israel, was quoting from an earlier speech by the late Ayatollah Khomeini in which he reassured supporters of the Palestinians that “the Zionist regime in Jerusalem” would “vanish from the page of time.”
He was not threatening to exterminate Jews or even Israel. He was comparing Israel’s occupation of the Palestinians with other illegitimate systems of rule whose time had passed, including the Shahs who once ruled Iran, apartheid South Africa and the Soviet empire. Nonetheless, this erroneous translation has survived and prospered because Israel and its supporters have exploited it for their own crude propaganda purposes.” (“Israel’s Jewish problem in Tehran”, Jonathan Cook, The Electronic Intifada)
Ahmadinejad poses no threat to Israel or the United States. Like everyone else in the Middle East, he just wants a breather from US and Israeli aggression.
This is from Wikipedia:
“The U.S. State Department has made claims of discrimination in Iran against Jews. According to its study, Jews may not occupy senior positions in government and are prevented from serving in the judiciary and security services and from becoming public school heads. The study says that Jewish citizens are permitted to obtain passports and to travel outside the country, but they often are denied the multiple-exit permits normally issued to other citizens. Allegations made by the U.S. State Department have been condemned by Iranian Jews. The Association of Tehrani Jews said in a statement, “We Iranian Jews condemn claims of the US State Department on Iranian religious minorities, announced that we are fully free to perform our religious duties and we feel no restriction on performing our religious rituals.”
Who should we believe; the Jews who actually live Iran or the troublemaking US State Department?
There are 6 kosher butcher shops, 11 synagogues and numerous Hebrew schools in Tehran. Neither Ahmadinejad nor any other Iranian government official has made any attempt to close any these facilities down. Never. Iranian Jews are free to travel (or move) to Israel if they chose. They are not imprisoned by an occupying army. They are not deprived of food and medicine. Their children do not grow up with mental disorders brought on by the trauma of sporadic violence. Their families are not blown up by gunships lobbing rounds on the beaches. Their supporters are not crushed by bulldozers or shot in the head with rubber bullets. They are not gassed and beaten when they peacefully demonstrate for their civil liberties. Their leaders are not hunted down and killed in targeted assassinations.
Roger Cohen wrote a very thoughtful essay on the topic for the New York Times. He said:
“Perhaps I have a bias toward facts over words, but I say the reality of Iranian civility toward Jews tells us more about Iran — its sophistication and culture — than all the inflammatory rhetoric. That may be because I’m a Jew and have seldom been treated with such consistent warmth as in Iran. Or perhaps I was impressed that the fury over Gaza, trumpeted on posters and Iranian TV, never spilled over into insults or violence toward Jews. Or perhaps it’s because I’m convinced the “Mad Mullah” caricature of Iran and likening of any compromise with it to Munich 1938 — a position popular in some American Jewish circles — is misleading and dangerous.” (“What Iran’s Jews Say”, Roger Cohen, New York Times)
Things aren’t perfect for Jews living in Iran, but they’re better than they are for Palestinians living in Gaza. Much better.

0 New Video Of The Eruption of Nyamuragira Volcano DR Congo

New video Of Nyamuragira Eruption In Congo

The eruption of Nyamuragira in the Congo continues, The lava flow is South of Nyamuragira and has extended several miles from the fissure cone area. The volcano has now been erupting for several months.

Nyamuragira and its neighbor Nyiragongo are a couple of Africa's most active volcanoes, having had many historical eruptions. They are considered to be dangerous volcanoes, as lava lake drainage has destroyed villages and caused fatalities in the past. One of the most interesting things I have ever seen about this volcano is how it occasionally catches elephants off guard and creates a lava 'casting' of an elephant in its flow. The lava erupted from these volcanoes is very silicic pahoehoe, and has been known to flow at speeds up to 60mph (not a lava flow you would be able to outrun, like Hawaii volcanoes)!

The current eruption at Nyamuragira does not currently threaten any developed area, or the area where the famed and highly endangered mountain lowland gorillas live. For now, this is a great eruption for tourists, and the Congo has seen a marked increase in the number of eco-tourism to the embattled nation-state.

0 Soon it will be illegal to use CASH for purchases over 5K euro in Belgium

(Google Translation from dutch article so please excuse the spelling)
In order to combat black money, any Belgian purchases of 5,000 euros or more in a few months only by credit card or bank transfer. Also advances on such expensive goods or services may not be paid with cash.
  •  Secretary of State-Fraud John Crombez (SP.A) mandatory electronic payment for large amounts
Who purchases of 5,000 euros or more have to pay with banknotes, to be quick. Before the summer to State Fraud John Crombez (SP.A) prohibit such large sums are paid in cash. Payments may be higher than € 5,000 then only with the credit card or by bank transfer. The federal government argues that the fight against black money and the "gray economy" sensitively. How exactly does this tax question, it is still not a foregone conclusion.

Experts are currently working on the new legislation, next Friday, the government team that first time through it. France, Greece and the Netherlands have
already lowered their threshold for cash payments to money laundering counter. "If the maintenance is done correctly, this is one of the most important anti-fraud measures', it is in government. The OECD estimates the share of underground economy in our country 18 percent of GDP. The sectors with the tax stamp, are those of the second hand car dealers, art dealers, jewelers, and real estate agents, in addition to catering and construction. In real estate it is not so much the amount but the advances. After all, that limitation applies to all advances that customers pay on purchases of 5,000 euros. If someone gives a deposit of say, 10 percent of a total of 5,000 euros, Crombez is that this amount is paid with the card or by bank transfer. The State will also try to enter the threshold for 'services rendered'. These are services that people with a professional such as lawyers and auditors, delivered. Since 1993, the limit for cash payments of 15,000 euros.Over two years the threshold has been lowered to 3,000 euros. The State will temporarily not explain this drastic measure. Which he reserves for parliament next week where he explained his policy does. Geert Noels economist would have been lost comments. "This is one of the few measures and GDP and tax revenue benefits. It breaks with Belgium and its past reputation as a thriving gray track. Hopefully the controls are adequate so that this change our mentality."

1 NYPD: Jewish Man Charged with Anti-Semitic Threats and Vandalism

The NYPD Hate Crime Task Force on Monday arrested a man in connection with a series of anti-Semitic threats and vandalism in Manhattan and Brooklyn.
Police charged David Haddad, 56, of Manhattan, with aggravated harassment as a hate crime. Sources told Fox 5's Lisa Evers that Haddad is himself Jewish and is related to one victims and knows another.
The NYPD has connected Haddad to four incidents: threatening phone calls made to an 80-year-old woman in Brooklyn on December 11, 2011; anti-Semitic symbols and statements scrawled on five apartment doors and a threatening phone received in a building in Manhattan on January 10, 2012; a threatening phone call made to an 87-year-old woman in Manhattan on January 11; and a threatening voicemail message left for a 78-year-old woman in Brooklyn on January 1, authorities said.
Sources said he is also the prime suspect in a rash of Swastika incidents and a phone threat over the weekend in Midwood.
