German terror alert caused by US security firm's test suitcase
Package aboard Air Berlin's Munich-bound flight from Namibia was a 'dummy' planted by a US firm to test airline security, authorities reveal
A suspicious suitcase found at Windhoek airport, Namibia, that triggered an international alarm was only a test of local security and did not contain any explosives, the German interior minister, Thomas de Maizière, said today.Namibian police found the suitcase amid routine security checks during loading ahead of a German tourist flight to Munich, the Namibian and German authorities said yesterday.
De Maizière told a news conference in Germany that the federal crime office (BKA) experts examined the suitcase and found it was a test suitcase designed to check security.
"BKA officials have examined it and the result is that it is a so-called 'real test suitcase' from a US company," he said. "This company produces alarm and detection systems and these test suitcases are made to test security measures. No explosives were found in the suitcase and at no time was there any danger to passengers."
